Alex was born on the 11th July 1963 in Lagos. He was educated in Auchi Polytechnic and University of Benin, where he obtained Higher National Diploma with a distinction in Painting (1991) and a Master of Fine Arts degree in 2000. In 2010, he won the Exceller’s Award from the same institution. He has participated in five solo exhibitions and many local and international group shows.
In 1988 and 1991, he received the Rector’s Certificate of Excellence and the American Ambassador’s Award in 1991. He received the Guinness Nigeria Plc Certificate of Merit in 2004. His works has been widely received by serious collectors locally and internationally.
Nwokolo adopts an instinctive and methodological system of expression that he has mastered over the years. His works are experimental in nature and have examined mainly the technique of creative colouring and the effect of light and dark on colours. Nwokolo’s canvases are laced with textural qualities, the paint, applied boldly as a thick impasto, which, worked by deft strokes of the palette knife, accumulates weight as it builds, in repeated planes, into a thick carpet of lights and shade.
His recent works probe the social problems, global issues about the environment and economic stability. Nwokolo’s oeuvres explore the urban Nigerian space, aesthetics and politics. Though his compositions are not formed exclusively from recycled materials, he is undeniably one of the Nigerian contemporary artists motivated by the use of ordinary discarded materials to create extraordinary pieces.
He is widely exhibited and is Guild of Professional Fine Artists as well as a member of the Society of Nigerian Artists.
